Titles are public, judged proof your training holds up. They're also the gateway to more advanced sport, working evaluations, and breeding decisions.

Specific uses of dogs

CGC / CGCA / CGCU

Pet owners, therapy prospects

Foundation manners verified by an AKC evaluator. CGCU adds urban environments, buses, elevators, crowds.

AKC Trick Dog (Novice → Elite)

Pet owners, content creators

Builds engagement, teaches handler mechanics, and is the friendliest on ramp to sport.

FastCAT

High drive dogs

100 yard timed coursing. Fastest way to title a drivey dog who already loves to chase.

ATT (AKC Temperament Test)

Working prospects, breeders

Standardized temperament eval. Essential pre purchase data on a breeding dog.

IGP foundations (BH, IGP 1)

Sport handlers

Tracking, obedience, protection. The most respected working test in the world.

Handler how tos

Prep for trial day

  1. 1Visit the trial venue twice in the two weeks prior, train sits/downs in that exact space.
  2. 2Practice the exact judging pattern with someone playing judge.
  3. 3Pack two of everything: leashes, collars, treats, water bowls.
  4. 4Arrive 90 min early. Walk the dog. Watch one ring run before you enter.
  5. 5Brief the steward on any handling quirks (e.g. 'dog is reactive to umbrellas').

Agency & handler FAQ

Common questions from pros.

Do I have to be an AKC member to title?+

No. Your dog needs AKC registration (or a PAL/ILP number for mixed breeds and unpapered purebreds). Most titles are open to PAL dogs.

Can a mixed breed dog earn AKC titles?+

Yes, CGC, ATT, Trick Dog, FastCAT, Scent Work, and many performance titles are open to mixed breeds via the AKC Canine Partners program.

How long does it take to earn a CGC?+

Most dogs with a basic foundation can pass CGC in 6 to 10 weeks of focused prep. CGCA and CGCU add another 4 to 8 weeks each.

Do you handle the dog at the trial, or do I?+

You handle. Titles belong to the handler dog team. We coach you through every prep session and attend trial day with you for your first event.

Are titles useful for breeding decisions?+

Yes, ATT, OFA scores, and working titles are core data points. We can advise on which titles are most meaningful for your specific breed and program.
